~~~ I give in ~~~
Ok... I think I am finally going to give in and admit that maybe the E-Readers are the way to go. I love to read and often re-read some of my favorites. I have given away so many of my books and then when I want to re-read one it is gone! There is just not enough room in Tassie to store a bunch of books. I have in my mind that I need a book to hold onto and turn the pages for me to be happy BUT I could be wrong...
Now the question is which one do I want?
Please if you have one or know someone who has one ... let me know what you think of them and which one would you buy. They can be pretty pricey (which I don't mind if it is a good one) and I don't want to choose wrong.
Thanks for your HELP!!!
I have an iPad and I love it! I can use it with Kindle books or iBooks. I use it a lot for recipes too. Much easier than trying to balance a cookbook on the counter. It also has a color screen, but it is brighter - like a computer screen. Can tire your eyes if you do a lot of reading. The plus side is that you can also play games or write notes on it.
If you like to read novels, etc., go for one of the new Kindles. We have one of those too. They have E Ink Pearl Screens which are very easy on the eyes. It's the size of a paperback. You can also adjust the font size. It is most like reading an actual page. The Kindle DX has the same screen, but it is larger (about 9 inches) and even easier on the eyes. I believe that Kindle also has the largest selection of book titles.
You will love the portability and convenience of an eReader. Good luck!
I have the original Kindle and love it. The new versions are even better, from what I can tell. I thought I would miss the "feel" of a "real" book, but I don't. The Kindle screen really does look like a book! The Amazon interface is quick and easy. Plus, they just introduced a book lending feature. (Although none of the books I've purchased are "lendable" yet.) Like you, Paul is about to "give in" and get an e-reader. Without a doubt, it'll be a Kindle. (I'll lend books, but I'm not sharing my Kindle!)
Hope this helps. Happy shopping!
I absolutely love my Kindle...I have hundreds of books on it and have only paid for less than 2 dozen. LOL! I have paid for some new favorites as well as some old friends.
There are so many choices now but I don't regret getting the Kindle. Stu wants an iPad someday but right now you can't read them out in the sun like I can my Kindle.
Read lots of reviews and try to hold as many of them as you can to get a feel.
I've had the Sony PRS-500 for a few years now and love it. With it's leather cover it has the 'feel' of a book while I'm reading it.
Your best bet is to probably go to a place like Best Buy and look at several types and pick out the one that suits you best - they're all pretty good.
I can not speak to which one to consider. Each has its advantages. Only you cn determine what suits your hands nd vision.
For me, regardless of which piece of hardware catches your eye, I'd make double-damn sure it is readable in both low-light conditions as well as in full sunlight, say from sitting in the sun in the living room or out by the pool. Finally, the least restrictive in terms of ownership of material and transferability of your books from one machine to another is of paramount importance to me. If I am spending $5 to $50 DOLLARS on a book, I want to know I have full ownership of all applicable rights I would have if it was paper and ink. Including the ability to lend the text, give or sell those rights to another. Just like a real book.
We've been looking, too, and we're probably going to go with the Kindle 3 after considering all the others. Karen asked on her quilting blog and the overwhelming recommendation there has been the kindle.
Hi Donna. We have a NOOK and think it’s just great! Our only problem with the NOOK is that we do not own two of them. Ellen has pretty much confiscated ours. My son has a new Kindle and he loves his machine too. Regarding the new Kindles, they are keyboard driven. Our NOOK is strictly window driven. Personally, I prefer using the window driven screens. My feeling is that they are all good and enjoyable to use and without huge differences. I think it just depends upon what you want to do with it (they do come with different options, depending upon the model and manufacture). I am not sure about your background so here comes some free advice. No matter which machine you purchase, you should consider where you would take it when you have questions about usage or something goes wrong. With our NOOK, I simply have to walk into a Barnes and Nobel and I am in business. I think Rick already said this, but if it were me (again not knowing your background), I would go to a Best Buy and see what they are selling. My reasoning is this, wherever you go throughout the western world, you always run into a Best Buy. I have found them to be very technically adept and extremely helpful with their products. Hope this is useful to you. By the way this is a great topic; I am seeing more and more discussions here in the RV blogging world.
I am looking forward to your decision, as I am thinking of getting one as well.
Donna, everybody I knows has some kind of E-Reader, and they all love them. Sorry I can't help with your decision, but I STILL feel that I need the book in my hands, and to feel the pages while I read! Good luck with your decision. laurie
Donna, I have the Kindle and I LOVE it! I laughed at one of the earlier comments - I'll lend my books, but not my kindle! Mine was a gift, and to be honest I had really been on the fence about e-readers. I would get a cover for it, and it does give you more of a real "book" feel. The screen truly has the look of a book page, and from what I understand the newest generation is even better. I love the fact that you can change the font size - no more glasses in bed LOL. And it is probably the easiest to read in bright light. It has been great when we travel - no more packing a separate bag just for my books. I keep it in my purse, and if I'm stuck waiting (Dr, car service, trains!) I have something to read at my fingertips. I just love it, and I think that it would be perfect for the limited space in an rv. Kat
I have a Nook and a Kindle. I love the Kindle. Its easy to use and Amazon books are cheaper. I have a leather cover which is a must have or the screen will get scratched. It easy to carry in my purse and it stays charged for 25-30 days. The Nook is not user friendly. The books are more expensive, its heavier and the charge only lasts 5-7 days. Kindle gets my vote.
I have the original Kindle and absolutely love it. Not only can I order FREE books from Amazon (I know, they're really old ones) but I can surf the internet (text sites) and answer email...It is slow but works without extra wireless stuff. I have purchased books for it but I am really enjoying revisiting the FREE classics. Of course, I might not have one had it not been for our son who works for Amazon.
I bought my son a Sony eReader last year for Christmas. He likes it but still reads a "real" book every once in awhile because he likes the feel of a book.
I bought him the Sony because he can also get books from our local library and he can store his books in his computer and not just via the reader.
I love the feel of a book and if I read one online...I use my netbook or my laptop. I love my netbook for travel.
Here's a great link to compare readers. If I would buy one it would probably be a Nook Color.
My son has two kindle readers and swears by them!! So, no matter what you choose, I'm sure you'll be happy with having one.
I see you've had quite a few chime in already...I got a Kindle for Christmas from my one and only...A week before Christmas he commented that I had not given him any hints about what I wanted so I told him...of course it didn't come in time but he wrapped the page confirming the order.
I love it...I like that I can change the type size..some books have it quite small...I've been having problems with my wrists and holding a book open at the center was causing me pain...most books are cheaper this way and like you said books take up a lot of space...I have done the same thing as you when an author writes a sequel to a trilogy I once read..I have to go back and read them all again so I have to buy them again.
Some of the Kindle books can be shared still, depends on the author I think...that is if the one you're sharing with has a kindle. I think you can download them to the computer too.....my daughter and I share all our books so we've decided we'll just swap Kindles when we have a book on there the other wants to read.
Oh, one downfall to the Kindle if you read at night and don't want to disturb your partner is that it isn't lighted. I gave Daughter a kindle light for Christmas which clips on...light doesn't bother my Honey so that isn't a problem for me.
Hi Donna! Oh, I can't help you as I don't own any of these. I have a friend who has a Kindle and loves it! Are y'all about to travel some more or do you get to stay home a while? Baby it's cold outside! :)
Be a sweetie,
Happy Birthday! Just found your blog and have enjoyed reading it. I happened to be in Best Buy before Christmas when the Nook was on sale.
I could not pass up the deal and am so glad that I purchased it. I like it even better since I bought a leather cover for it...gives me my 'book' feel. I have not experienced any problems at all. Good luck with your decision. I don't think you can go wrong no matter which you choose.
