We are finally leaving the PA Dutch Country after being here for about 3 weeks ~ I will miss it here! Our trip up the East Coast so far has been phenomenal... We left around 9 am and started heading towards Cape Cod but the roads we chose were ones that took us around NYC ~ WAY around. It was an uneventful drive with beautiful farmlands and cute little towns most of the way and then some very rough bounce us around interstates. I think a few things bounced right from the front to the back of Tassie.... We decided to boondock at a exit we heard about that allows overnight parking on I-84 (exit 2) in Connecticut. For those of you who don't know what boondocking is ~ it is basically pulling off road and staying someplace overnight for free with no hook-ups. A lot of people use Wal-Mart and we do too but if I can find a alternate it is much quieter. Anyways the rest area was a huge success and not only beautiful but quiet. About 4 other rigs pulled in for the night too. The best thing about this rest area is they had an area just for RV's and one area just for Trucks. They also had a dump station.... While there we met the nicest old couple that was lost and Ralph helped them with their map and got them on the right path again. I can't imagine RVing at 90!

After a restful night we were back on the road and heading east toward Cape Cod. I spent many summer vacations in this area as my Great Aunt and then my parents owned a cute little cottage right on Buttermilk Bay in Buzzards Bay. Soon after, about 4 hours traveling through the rolling hills of Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts we arrived safely at Bay View Campground in Bourne, Ma ~
Click here for our full review. It is at the beginning of the Cape and is centrally located for site seeing. What a nice park for us to stay at for the week! More on that later. After setting up camp we headed out for dinner and a ride to go see the the old homestead. We ate at a place called Sandy's. We read that it had been one great restaurant for 55 years with fabulous seafood ~ well when we got there it was under new owners and was the Grand Opening... to keep it short if you are ever here don't go to Sandy's... lol lol No cars in the parking lot ~ should have been our first BIG clue! After dinner we rode around town and went to see the cottage. New owners added on a HUGE extension to the cottage and now it is a big house.

After we visited the cottage we headed over to see the Train Bridge. I use to get such a big thrill seeing this when I was a little kid. The top part lowers when a train comes and after it crosses the Cape Cod Canal it rises back up ~ Very cool!

Completed in 1935, this beautiful Lift Bridge carries rail traffic across the Cape Cod Canal. Unfortunately though, there's not much railroad traffic to Cape Cod these days ~ Just a train that takes you to Hyannis on a day trip. You can ride across the bridge if you take the train trip.. They also have a rail & sail package trip.
Before the Cape Cod Canal was constructed, ships traveling up the Atlantic coast between New York to Boston had to sail all the way around the tip of Cape Cod. The canal makes the trip much shorter, and as such is a vital Federal navigable waterway managed by the Army Corps of Engineers. The Corps is therefore ultimately responsible for this railroad bridge, in addition to the Bourne and Sagamore highway bridges.
This was our first day at Cape Cod!!! Fun times ahead ~ stay tunned ☺
