A Step Back in Time

"The Landing of the Pilgrims."(1877) by Henry A. Bacon.
The Pilgrims are traditionally said to have landed at Plymouth Rock.
We got up early so we could head up the coast and visit the town of Plymouth.  We have been here several times but it is always fun for me to visit this Historic Town where the Pilgrims stepped forth and started our first New England colony.  After a long trip across the oceans they finally arrived at Plymouth (historically known as Plimouth and Plimoth). Plymouth holds a place of great prominence in American history and is known as "America's Hometown." Plymouth was the site of the colony founded in 1620 by the Pilgrims, passengers of the famous ship the Mayflower. Plymouth is where New England was first established. It is the oldest municipality in New England and one of the oldest in the United States. The town has served as the location of several prominent events, the most notable being the First Thanksgiving feast.   Plymouth served as the capital of Plymouth Colony from its founding in 1620 until the colony's merger with the Massachusetts Bay colony in 1691
Mayflower II ~ Info Sign ~ Plymouth Rock
The first winter was not kind to the Pilgrims and 45 of the 102 passengers had died from scurvy and other illnesses.  They didn't want the Indians to know that people were dying so they secretly buried them up on a hill at night and planted corn over them.  By the first Thanksgiving there were only 5 of the 53 women still alive.  There are many monuments throughout the city recognizing the Pilgrims and Indians who began this historic town.

Massasoit friend to the Pilgrims ~ William Bradford - first governor ~ Plymouth Rock
There are also many historic homes & buildings around Plymouth and I am just posting a few of them for you to see.  You really need more then a day to enjoy all that is here.

After a full day of exploring and enjoying the quaint seaside community of Plymouth we went to the wharf and ate at Cabby's Seafood Shack.... We had a delicious Lobsta Roll and award winning Clam Chowdah....  It was delish!

On to the next adventure

Food looks great! Love the lobster signs. Looks like we will be staying at your Rainbow park for a few days while we enjoy the Gulf and Tarpon Springs. Would really enjoy seeing Plymouth one of these days.

I took a closer look at that lobster roll. How the heck do you eat it? I've never had either of those delicacies you ordered. Are the clams chewy??

Thanks for a great post about the Pilgrims. It sure sounded like pretty rough times and not a whole lot to be thankful for at first.

I've never been to Plymouth and would really like to do that if we ever get back East again. Loved the history lesson.

We are now parked on your site 604. Cloudy and rainy. Need to find a good beach when the sun comes out. Also a good seafood restaurant.
