Carlsbad & KOA

We left Fort Stockton, Texas and headed on down the highway... After a few miles on I-10 we headed north on US 285 which was a really great road to travel... It was 4 lanes and hardly anyone on it! Our destination was Carlsbad, NM to see the Caverns and visit Roswell to look for alien life!!! One of my favorite things.... On our ride we saw lots of oil sites and drilling. Finally we went over the New Mexico State Line and gained another hour...

We made reservations at the Carlsbad KOA... We usually don't stay in KOA's because they can be a little pricey (this one was $40.50 a night with our discount) but we were not sure of the campgrounds in the area. The KOA was really nice and the people who owned it were very friendly. It had FHU with 50A, cable, good wi-fi and we chose a pull trough site. Both Verizon and AT&T phones worked well however, my Internet card (AT&T) did work... BUT... we got an email from them telling us we were in a NO NETWORK area and was roaming.... YIKES!!! We unplugged right away since we did not go over the roaming allowance yet!!! Did not need a HUGE charge from them.... Here is Tassie all parked in her spot and these cute little birds were everywhere... Are they Quails??? I don't know.

During our stay there the owner took off in his incredible flying machine...
Now I don't think it was an Ultralight but it did look fun....

Enjoy a short clip of his flight

The next day we took a ride over to Brantley Lake State Park, which was about 10 miles away, to check it out... When we got there it was a wonderful park the is definitely BIG rig friendly and the price... $14.00 a night. Of course you don't get all the amenities that KOA had but you do get Water & 50amp power... and a beautiful view. They had a about 4 sites with sewer but they were taken. We loved it there and called for reservations right away. So after our 2 days at KOA we moved on over to the state park. After we made the reservations we went to Sitting Bull Falls... More on that in my next post... So stay tuned for all we did in and around Carlsbad.

Until Later... Have FUN, Travel Safe & Enjoy Everyday!

Wow, those KOA prices are really inflated, aren't they? KOA parks are nice, but we try to avoid them when possible just because of their high prices.

Enjoyed your tour of the area, Donna. Look forward to more postings. Enjoy.

Hi Donna! Oh, I'll bet you're having fun! The park sounds so nice! Now, guess what? We used to live in Roswell! We lived there for 10 years and just loved it! The kids still call it home. It wasn't crazy UFO stuff when we lived there at all. Just a sweet sleepy little town with nice folks. When you get there if you head toward the area called Enchanted Hills - that's where we lived. New Mexico is really a beautiful state and I don't think I ever saw any prettier sunset than the ones we saw while we lived there.
Maybe you'll run into an alien! :)
Be a sweetie.

Wow, this part of NM looks kinda barren, no?

How cool. I wanna fly one of those things!

Thanks for the review of the Carlsbad KOA, we plan on staying there for a few nights when we visit next month. It was nice to get a glimpse of what it looked like and to hear that it's o.k.

Looks like great fun and you are getting some spring like temperatures, too. I'm trying to follow your camping info closely since we are planning a trip out west this summer or the next. We have avoided the KOA's because of price; nothing can be that good! Looking forward to seeing your next pictures. Have a fun, safe trip!

Good morning Donna,I love the look of the rolling hills on the highway..it would be fun to drive along this road..14.00 dollars a night sounds better than 40 dollars a night..

Is your knee completely healed now?/enjoy your stay in the state park.Hugs, Baba
